Art on the Border

El Paso's art world cannot be understood apart from its geography. The city and Ciudad Juarez together form a binational metropolis of more than two million people, one of the largest on the US-Mexico border, and the cultural permeability of that border, the movement of people, ideas, and art forms across the Rio Grande, shapes everything produced here. The El Paso Museum of Art, housed in a handsome 1905 building downtown, holds a significant permanent collection with particular strength in the art of the colonial Southwest and northern Mexico, including a substantial collection of colonial-era santos and retablos that reflect the region's deep Hispanic Catholic heritage. The Rubin Center for the Visual Arts at the University of Texas at El Paso presents an ambitious program of contemporary exhibitions with a strong focus on border-region artists and binational cultural exchange. The Chamizal National Memorial, commemorating the peaceful resolution of a century-long border dispute between Mexico and the United States, hosts cultural programming that reflects the deep ties between the two nations. The El Paso Art Association, one of the oldest arts organizations in Texas, continues to support local artists through exhibitions and programming.
